Gospel Music in Modern America
AFAM4000S001 4 points.

This is an undergraduate course introducing students to the study of religion, African American culture, and black popular music. The course will engage theoretical and historical questions about the emergence and evolution of gospel music as aesthetic performance, commercial product, cultural politics, musical genre, racial performance, and theological terrain across the twentieth century up to the present moment. There are no prerequisites for the course, but prior coursework in African American history, popular music or religious studies is helpful.
