By Niccolo Mirgone, Visiting Undergraduate Student in Wall Street Prep, School of Professional Studies
My journey this summer began in Belgium, where I live when I am not studying in the United Kingdom. The anticipation and excitement of traveling to one of the world's most renowned universities was overwhelming. I carefully planned my trip, ensuring I had all the necessary documents and essentials for a smooth transition.
The flight from Belgium to New York was both thrilling and daunting. This was my first time traveling so far away from home for such a significant academic endeavor. I had always seen New York in movies and was very excited to visit in person. Landing in New York was an experience in itself; the city's energy is electric, and I couldn't wait to immerse myself in it. The idea of studying economics at Columbia, a university renowned for its economic research, made the journey even more exciting.
Columbia's campus is not just a place to study—it's a vibrant community that offers multiple resources and support. The Ruggles dorms were welcoming, and it didn't take long to settle in and make new friends. Living in the heart of New York City is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The city's mix of different cultures and its lively atmosphere are unmatched. Every part of NYC has its own story, and being here has been incredible.
A tour inside the United Nations Headquarters in NYC was as part of our Columbia University Summer Session experience.
As part of the Wall Street Prep Focus Area, I am enrolled in two courses: Introduction to Finance and The American Economy.
The Introduction to Finance course offers a comprehensive overview of financial concepts, markets, and instruments. It's an engaging course that combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications, preparing students for real-world financial decision-making. The instructors are experts in their fields, providing invaluable insights and mentorship.
The American Economy course delves into the economic landscape of the United States, exploring its historical context, current trends, and future projections. This course has broadened my perspective on financial policies and their impact on both domestic and global scales. The interdisciplinary approach of the course, integrating history, politics, and economics, has enriched my academic experience. Studying the American economy in the U.S. is incredibly useful because it provides first hand insights into the world's largest economy, offering practical knowledge and real-world examples that enrich the learning experience.
The number one thing I want to do this summer is to explore and understand the financial hub of New York City. Being in the heart of the financial capital of the world presents a unique opportunity to observe and learn from the best in the industry. I aim to visit major financial institutions, attend networking events, and visit famous neighborhoods and landmarks, such as the United Nations Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan.
Overall, my journey to Columbia University as a Visiting Student has been a transformative experience. From the initial excitement of traveling from Belgium to settling into the vibrant life of New York City, every moment has been enriching. As I continue my studies and explore new opportunities, I am confident that my time at Columbia will be a cornerstone of my academic and professional journey.
