As a politics student, I have spent a large proportion of my time reading about the United Nations (UN), including its pivotal role in the international system and the noble principles it upholds.
When I was informed that we would be visiting the UN Headquarters in New York as part of the Columbia University Visiting Students program, it felt like a dream come true, and I was filled with excitement and eagerness.
Our day began with a leisurely exploration of the headquarters. The moment we set foot into the building, I could feel the buzz of international diplomacy of UN staff and diplomats busily moving about.
As we made our way around the headquarters, we took in the grandeur of the place. We first visited the souvenir shop, where I picked up some UN-themed merchandise, including a gender equality pin as it was a sustainable development goal that means a lot to me. We were also gifted with posters and infographics that illustrated various global issues and the UN’s efforts to address them. These souvenirs felt like more than just simple mementos of the trip, but rather as reminders of the UN’s mission across the world.
We then heard an engaging talk on sustainability and sustainable finance by Layalee Ramahi from the UN Environment Program Finance Initiative. It was extremely insightful, and we had an opportunity to speak with Layalee about the UN’s sustainability efforts. I felt so thankful that I had the privilege to chat with someone who was so passionate and had so much expertise in the field of sustainability, and our conversation left me with a lot to ponder about.
After the talk, we had lunch at the cafeteria. Because of how international the UN is, there was a variety of cuisines available for us to pick from. I had teriyaki chicken with rice, and it really reminded me of home. I really liked how thoughtful and intentional the organization is in promoting diversity and inclusivity.
We were then treated to a private tour around the UN, which allowed us to see the various councils and delve into the rich history of the organization. Seeing the councils in person made me so excited, it was incredible to be there in person when all I have seen of the councils were pictures. We visited the General Assembly Hall, the Security Council Chamber, and other significant rooms where critical decisions shaping our world are made. I took so many pictures and sent them to loved ones and friends. Needless to say, they were jealous of this great opportunity!
After a whirlwind of a day, our meaningful visit came to an end. I left the UN Headquarters feeling profoundly enriched and inspired by its important role and stake in challenging global issues. I am profoundly grateful to Columbia University for providing this opportunity of a lifetime that I'm sure will never forget.
