Available online and on campus, courses are scheduled for evenings during the fall, spring, and summer terms. You can complete the program at the pace you’re most comfortable with, whether part-time or full-time.
Attending classes on Columbia’s campus in New York City, you will interact with faculty and fellow students, gain access to world-class libraries and other resources, and have the opportunity to attend events and participate in student activities. Throughout the year, on-campus courses meet at 6:10 p.m. EST (Eastern Standard Time).
Online, you will interact with faculty and classmates through a social learning platform that incorporates weekly live discussion groups, independent and collaborative coursework, and forums. Courses meet at 8:30 p.m. EST online. (International students studying on campus may enroll in one online class each semester.)
The program is open to eligible individuals who have at least a bachelor’s degree, including those who:
- seek advanced instruction in business
- plan to pursue an MBA
- want to enhance their knowledge in a specific area of business
Advanced undergraduates should consider the Certification of Professional Achievement in Business.
The 24-point Advanced Certificate in Business, which may be completed full-time in two terms or part-time over three years, is comprised of:
Four foundational courses (12 points):
- Introduction to Finance
- Introduction to Marketing and Marketing Management
- Financial Accounting
- Managing Human Behavior in the Organization
Four courses covering advanced topics (12 points):
- Corporate Finance
- Marketing Strategy
- Options and Futures
- Security Analysis
You will work with an academic advisor to plan your schedule based on your personal and professional interests. If you previously completed some of the required courses at another university, you can customize your program by substituting up to two courses, selected in conjunction with your academic advisor and with the approval of the program director. Potentially you may also cross register for select courses at other Columbia schools.
To complete the program, you must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and no course grades below a C. Upon completion, you will receive an Advanced Certificate in Business and you may request an official transcript detailing your advanced course of study and your grades. In addition, obtaining the certificate qualifies you for Columbia University alumni benefits and if you are an international student, you may be eligible for F1 Optional Practical Training (OPT).
